Warm Digits are a whole-hearted “retro” duo from Newcastle, producing a lively and hugely entertaining form of melodic Krautrocky-beat combo music on Keep Warm…With The Warm Digits (DISTRACTION RECORDS DIST22CD), and as their name suggests they reintroduce heat, passion and friendliness to the area of digital music, which may be in danger of growing too cold, clinical and sterile. Steve Jefferis plays guitar and synths, Andrew Hodson drums, and both are involved in the production of visual and video materials which I assume accompany their live sets. A couple of the jokey titles, such as ‘Trans-Pennine Express’ and ‘Here Come The Warm Digits’ admit to everything up front, pre-empting everything the critics are going to throw at them in terms of Neu!, Kraftwerk, and Eno references, but a “wacky” band they ain’t, and they do a much more convincing and danceable version of the electro-beat thing than the dreadful Add N To X, if anyone is unfortunate enough to remember them. A fab release.

For a more subdued take on electronica, there’s the new release You Can’t Get There From Here (MONOTYPE REC MONO038) from Scanner and David Rothenberg, where the laptop music of Robin Rimbaud meets the clarinet playing of Rothenberg; the album is a species of spindly lounge-jazz riffs, accompanied by filtered and pulsating loops in a vaguely art-gallery ambient setting. The combinations of sounds are pleasing, but I feel the performances don’t really develop, and each piece stands in one place like a sort of hologram artwork, sparkling briefly and saying little. I want to persevere with this one however, as David Rothenberg seems a very genuine and inventive polymath sort of chap, a nature-studying academic who integrates his ideas about birdsong with his clarinet playing.

From Holland, a tremendous team-up of two maverick eccentrics Adam Bohman and If, Bwana. Long have I admired their many manifestations and issuances, but I didn’t appreciate they were old friends since the 1980s. This session from the summer of 2010 sees them producing many a churning morass of grinding, scraping and vaguely spring-loaded tootling grumblement and moanage, presumably generated from multiple desktops and tables loaded with an array of non-musical devices; the very title, Adhesives And Grout (BROMBRON 18), shows they’re able to poke fun at their DIY and garden-shed approach to improvisation for this release. They also perform a few tracks of concrete poetry, in some cases apparently just plucking found words and phrases out of the local shopping paper and transforming their utter banality into sheer magic, by overlapping the dialogue and through the combination of their distinctive speaking voices: Bohman as plummy as a Christmas duff packed with raisins, Al Margolis withering everything in sight with his acidic sardonic whine. Lads, Bob Cobbing is smiling down at you from his corner of Heaven where he’s just opened an infinite version of Better Books. And just look at those track titles – ‘Rhubarbian Ruminations’ is the most perfect two-word description of the whole album, redolent of a secret allotment or orchard where the very fruits and vegetables are conducive to metaphysical contemplation. And who wouldn’t want to be a member of their ‘Pudding Club’? Let’s hope this is the start of a new musical genre…Groutrock!

Labyrinthe (BRUIT CLAIR BC05) appears to be the debut release from Emmanuelle Gibello, a Sorbonne graduate from Paris who has done some live performances with electronics and multi-media settings. Her approach to the field recording genre is highly imaginative and these four cuts (two of them quite lengthy and indeed very labyrinthine) will reward many further spins. Subtle and underplayed, her sources are I suspect not intended to be decoded or identified, so much as used as triggers for personal resonances and internal fictions; she admits to being inspired by literature and science fiction. It’s about time someone started putting field recordings to some compositional use, instead of inviting us to simply contemplate the immersive joys of nature for a change. Extremely “sensible”, in the French meaning of that word, these compositions have many hidden corner and still waters running deep…if you’ll pardon the mixed metaphors. Check back in a few years and we may be looking at a worthy successor to Lionel Marchetti. And if you buy one of these 300 numbered copies, you’ll have her autograph in your collection. Roll them bones!

Two variant editions

This is the first issue of the magazine to be produced via a print-on-demand service www.lulu.com. Because of the cover-mount CD, there are two editions available. They have slightly different cover designs. Otherwise there is no difference between the content. There will be 500 copies of the CD-version available, whereas the lulu edition will remain available for longer. Also, with lulu you have the option of downloading a (cheaper) digital copy rather than ordering a print copy.

To get the edition with the free CD, buy from The Sound Projector Shop.

To get the edition without the CD, buy it from lulu. Their postage may be a little pricier than mine, but they will deliver it in a fine corrugated card package, just like a book.

We last heard from American composer Michael Gardiner when he collaborated with John Latartara on the fascinating and uncategorisable Beethoven Hammerklavier project. Here he is with an equally unique solo record Source Of The Symptom (VISCERAL MEDIA VMR 005), which amazingly began life as a piano recording of sorts, yet at first blow appears to be situated about as far as possible from any classical music aspirations or impressions. Matter of fact, you’d be forgiven for mistaking it for a harsh noise wall record, considering the blistering and scathing electronic overtones that murderously seek out their prey in the opening tracks. Only by pressing on and delving into this maelstrom do we start to find the hidden key, the “discarded piano variations” that were the starting point of what I take to be a very extreme mode of electro-acoustic composition with wild treatments and processing. Gardiner says the work takes place “within a larger frame of a discarded will towards academic music altogether”, a worrying statement that almost suggests outright hostility to anything played on a well-tempered Klavier, composed in the 18th century, or released on the Deutsche-Grammophon label. Gardiner also describes, in extremely economical terms, a semi-mystical experience that befell him in Tokyo and which was another starting point for this composition. It’s a bracing and invigorating listen, assembled with a great deal of consideration, distilled into taut packets of musical information in a solid, no-nonsense manner. It’s also mastered quite loud, so use caution. The puzzling record cover doesn’t do much to reassure the mind, either – look carefully to find the face of a man seemingly caught between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea in a surreal photo-montage landscape. Excellent!

French duo Melmac have been recording for about 12 years, and Le Désert Avance (RONDA RND 15) is their latest release after a four-year break. The Reverter brothers draw influence and inspiration from minimalist, Ambient music and electronic Krautrock, and there is much weight and forethought in their grimly advancing electronic tones. The record may start off as something recognisably in a “dark ambient” mode, but soon becomes something much less familiar, winding its way across cryptic, blank landscapes of indiscernible noise and subtle, layered bleakness. The intoning voices (performed by Ogrob from Sun Plexus) on the title track are especially chilling, like a sort of minimalist variant on the sound poetry of François Dufrene. All is draped with an aura of disquiet and anguish; recommended for fans of Étant Donnés and Asmus Tietchens.

“Assemble. Age!” (MUTABLE MUSIC 17540-2) is the title of the new release by If, Bwana. As a motto that phrase might just sum up his musical career since 1984. I have no idea what I mean by that, unless I’m thinking about Al Margolis’s skills as a composer who splices tape, and it’s that facet of his art which is showcased here, as he rejigs and refits pieces of live recordings of singers, classical musicians, and fellow experimenters, compressing them into weird time-lapse movies. On the second track he creates a multi-headed version of Lisa Barnard Kelley, creating thereby a female hydra which sings, mutters, wails, giggles, tells stories and holds an argument with itself all at the same time. On ‘Death to the 8 Notes’, he makes a grisly soup of slow and turgid music, using voices, trombone, flute, synth and computer processing; in slow motion, this protean monster changes into surprising and unexpected shapes. There’s no denying the skills of the players involved (including the great Tom Hamilton), but without Al’s brilliant layerings and juxtapositions I wonder if they could have arrived at a musical collaborative statement quite as utterly strange and alien as this creepy funereal crawl. Not a comfortable listen, but the times we live in call for invidious and subtle monstrosities like this that might help to bring us to our senses.

Eco D’Alberi are an Italian free jazz combo, evidence of the free improv and jazz activity that has apparently been burgeoning in that part of Europe since the mid-1990s. Here they are recorded live on their self-titled CD (PORTER RECORDS PRCD-4054) performing in New York, Pisa and Zurich at various festivals in recent years. Ken Waxman’s liner notes point out that these Italians took their name from a short story by Henry Dumas, the Afro-American poet, writer and political activist who was heavily influenced by free jazz and moved in Sun Ra’s personal orbit during the 1960s. Eco D’Aberi’s music may not be as radical as this name-checking might suggest, but Edoardo Marraffa is the first tenorman I’ve heard who audibly plays with an Italian accent; he may keep trying to find his way back into his Ornette and Coltrane records, yet his speedy phrases still come out slicked-up with olive oil. This I regard as evidence of his distinctive voice. Pianist Alberto Braida has been paying close attention to Cecil Taylor performances from the 1980s, but this Juilliard-flavoured dimension is another aspect that works in the group’s favour. When the quartet are not taking everything head-on like an impending car collision at high speed (such as on ‘Up Toward The Sun’), they are capable of following a curlicued path around an ornate cement garden with as many quasi-classical twists and turns as an Italian operetta.

Aura (ETUDE 021) is an excellent process piece put together by Spaniard King of Austerity Alfredo Costa Monteiro. It’s constructed from numerous recordings of the percussion instruments of Pilar Subirá, and in making his assemblages Alfredo worked only with edited segments of tape where the “point of impact” has been removed (meaning, I suppose, that we can’t hear the percussive blow), leaving him with long stretches of resonance and decay. He seems to have entered a near-trance as he layered together these episodes, labouring at the electro-acoustic Movieola and finding consonances and correspondences in the most subtle and imperceptible of detail. If he was doing this as a housepainter, I can imagine him working through all the available combinations of 65 slightly different rolls of off-white wallpaper. He’d come up with such a perfect schema for your living room walls that you would immediately enter a state of ecstasy simply by the act of entering the room. Not exactly an “eventful” listen, nonetheless it’s a much more solid and distilled piece of gentle droning purity than if he’d arrived at it through purely digital sound-generation methods.

Is it just my imagination, or are a lot of people doing the “live music plus field recordings” thing lately? That’s pretty much what greets your listening flaps when you spin Subterranean Sky (AURAL TERRAINS TRRN0412) by Thanos Chrysakis, where his mixing desk purrs like an enormous seal on the rocks as it quietly accepts multiple layers of his “composed and de-composed” sounds between its hungry tusks. Actually the live music elements here aren’t as widespread as I first thought; he adds his own metal percussion thranngs to the equation on but two occasions, and is joined by a clarinet and guitar player for one track, plus a viola on the closing piece. Now that I succumb to the magnetic pull of this disk a little more, gotta confess there’s a faintly compelling undertow to some of these wispy highly-processed drones. Born in Athens, Thanos currently resides in London.

Born some ten years earlier than his compatriot above, not that age matters, is Dimitri Voudouris who is fact South African but was born in Greece. Pogus has assembled a handy collection of this self-taught electro-acoustic composer, and AΛO=Φ/ UVIVI / 1:Θφ4 / ONTA (POGUS PRODUCTIONS P21056-2) displays an impressive range of avant-techniques and methodologies – computer-assisted composition, graphical scores, treated voices, loudspeaker set-ups, and an interactive troupe of robots on the astonishing 25-minute composition which opens the record. Voudouris provides concise notes in the booklet, and a cursory skim reveals he is brimming with strong ideas about language, emotion, psychology, and contemporary society. Unsettling, uncomfortable music with a rigorous core of steely intellect; what with the alienised processed voices and the general sense of malaise abiding here, I would guess that label boss Al Margolis recognises a kindred spirit and some musical parallels akin to his own If, Bwana endeavours. Very good!

Another record which, tonight at least, is managing to exert its mesmerising force through ebb and flow and minimal radiating throbbage is Erosions (AURAL TERRAINS TRRN0413) by Lutnahimat. This is a one-man project by Ian S. of London who, with the minimal music and minimal information available about his life, preoccupations and intentions, manages to project an image of staring-eyed hermitry and dedicated study to his craft, which I like. Quickly growing bored with conventional instrumentation and compositional methods, he has devised his own electronic music instruments whose inner workings are known only to him. Though he’s not in the same league as David Tudor with his vibrating boxes (and who is?), Lutnahimat’s 20-minute ‘Snow in Hadal Zone’ here is one of the most affectingly ‘blank’ examples of this genre of music that has crossed our desk for some time. Even recent submissions from Raster-Noton seems positively raucous in comparison with this laid-back, evilly-humming introverted rattlesnake of electric drone. Field recordings from India and Africa feature elsewhere on the record, but so far for me nothing licks the intensity of ‘Snow’, conveying the effects of bad drugs and being stranded by bad weather inside a dingy bedsit with a gas fire for company. A nice mysterious item; I must check and see if I was ever sent any of his previous releases on Entr’Acte.

A new compilation album for download! The second in a series of unique TSP-branded internet-only music releases. Each issue of the magazine has a sticker with your download voucher. Visit the website link as indicated to download English Wildlife, a new compilation of UK underground music featuring Adam Lygo, Bela Emerson with John Wills, E.M.B., dsic, annalogue, Tea & Toast Band, Susan Matthews, 55 blues, Hari Hardman, Lanterns and Jupiterdogs. This offer only available to purchasers of TSP 18.

Vinyl Viands. “The six tracks, bearing evocative titles which seem to have been derived from common activities on the factory floor rather than the cloistered chambers of the music school, all blend seamlessly together to make an exciting and dynamic racket spread over both sides of this pulsating purple-vinyl pressing.” And another 12 pages in like manner…

Tremendous visual art from three new contributors. guido huebner, who is also Das Synthetische Mischgewebe, provides numerous examples of dark and disturbing ‘insomniac drawings’. “In b/w they look rather fearfull without the cokurs? Changes a lot.” Andrew Hannah provides some unsettling collages. Also drawings from Zven Balslev, Danish artist, printmaker, LP cover artist and operator of the bizarre SMITTEKILDE record label; anla courtis, the Argentinean primitive-futurist; and Rik Rawling with some dazzling Luciferian linework.

Unframed Recordings: read about these impressive marginal art-gallery releases with beautiful letterpress covers, plus a mini-interview with Gill Arno. “Perhaps we all share an understanding of music as a component of a larger sensorial universe lying behind the bare musical fact.”

Michel Henritzi has released many new records of his mournful guitar work. We heard them all. “Each performed note and sound, however grotesque it may be in shape, is uttered with deliberation and stands out starkly in a backdrop of near-vacancy.”

Adam Lygo has been making surreal guitar noise records for over ten years. We heard some of them. “The music is completely abstract noise, but largely not too violent in tone; these tunes send you mad in other ways, cutting off the air supply to the brain, hammering down your resistance with insistent repeats.”

Book reviews: Jennifer Hor casts an eye over a new survey of Australian experimental music, while Harley Richardson dissects a book about members of The Fall and questions the meaning of radical politics in music made since the 1960s. “Look beyond the scope of this book to today’s emptied out politics, and we can see that this anti-democratic sentiment now informs much of public policy and what passes for radical thinking…”

Regular review sections include: BLACK METAL, FIELD RECORDINGS, ATOMS OF PURE NOISE, TAPE MASCHINES MAKEN KLANG, IN THE ART GALLERY, ACOUSTIC AND FOLK, WEIRD AND NIGHTMARISH, USA UNDERGROUND, STONER AND DOOM, THE DRONING ONES, THE CRACKLING ESTHER, GUITAR MUSIC, THE PHANTOM OF LIBERTY, SONGS, and THE LAMENTING OCTOPUS.

What characterises these five from Margolis is that all utilise and reprocess the performances of musicians and vocalists, including friends and local avantists such as Tom Hamilton, Lisa Barnard and Jacqueline Martelle. Their work has been processed, edited, selected and assembled into strange and mutated pieces which in many cases are quite some way removed from the realms of the familiar. Nice item here from two of my favourite New Yorkers…Al Margolis is If, Bwana who gives us 31 (GD 021), a selection of five recent electro-acoustic compositions, and Geoff Dugan is the owner of the GD Stereo label which has been home to some truly wonderful sound art, field recordings, performed music and generally intellectually stimulating work. This is particularly so on the slow alien creepsterness of ‘Fitz 2/3′, derived from processed accordion, vocals, guitar and oboe. You may prefer the jangling corruscate-o-scopes of ‘Soiled’, which is made simply from multi-tracking a bowed guitar. Slow, sludgy and unsettling process art of the highest degree.

Also from New York, Gilles Aubry is the latest contributor to the winds measure recordings label with his s6t8r (WMR 16), three pieces of minimal sound art derived from field recordings made in Berlin. As with Margolis, the transformative process allows for results that are both beautiful and horrifying, as if all humanity had been bled from a street-ful of active and happy Germans, resulting in a collection of grey, mottled statues who bleed black tar from their empty eyes. If you want to feel like the only person alive as you wander through a monochrome version of a de Chirico landscape not knowing what surreal threats await you, this record is just the medicine you require. The embossed cover art on this release is very suggestive of rusted sheet metal, as if the process of decay had somehow managed to migrate onto paper instead.

Kim Cascone‘s anti-musical celestial forces (STÖRUNG str006) is presented to us primarily as a field recording record, but in fact Cascone is supplementing this 30-minute set of low-level VLF recordings and location-recordings fetched from America and Europe with various minimal narrative elements, including actors who add spoken word, a numbers station voice, and Mike Rooke who most intriguingly plays a ‘mad scientist’. Plus there’s a musical dimension with the ‘cello gauze’ (?) of Claire Singer. In all this is a puzzling and mysterious piece of radiophonic drama whose meaning is far from clear. It does a lot to align itself with the proclaimed intentions borrowed from American avant-garde cinema, referring obliquely to the works of Brakhage and Hollis Frampton.

Hungarian Ákos Garai sent us a copy of Til Ødslig Horisont in 2005, one of the most extreme examples of baffling minimalism I’d heard up to that point at least. Nice to see him make a return with Pilis, (3L001) the debut release on the 3LEAVES label and in an edition of 150 CDR copies. While his previous release was all-electronic (as I recall it), Pilis is a collection of field recordings of water streams around the ‘sacred place’ he has discovered outside the city of Budapest. The intention here is to share his contemplative thoughts and feelings as he made his personal odyssey around the idyllic area, never straying far from the stream of clear water. The resulting tapes were modified with computer treatments as he composed the piece, an experience which allowed him to relive the enjoyable hiking experience. His highly personal and spiritual observations about the environment have been layered into the work, resulting in a very open-ended piece of inquisitory art.

Terminal Lovers spring out of Cleveland with a very convincing set of murky avant-rock in the shape of As Eyes Burn Clean (PUBLIC GUILT PG018). Led by Dave Cintron, the band includes players scaped from numerous other band projects, such as Keelhaul, Midnight, Lung, Darvocets, Dimbulb and many others, including the very fine Scarcity Of Tanks. I find it fascinating how many contemporary American underground bands are rediscovering their country’s rich heritage of late-psychedelic rock, but doing it by way of Krautrock and throwing in other influences from post-punk experimental bands. Terminal Lovers add a knowing, semi-literary touch of surrealism into their lyrics, which we are told are intended to emulate the effects of the cinema of Jodorowsky. Whether you accept any of this rich cultural cross-fertilisation or not, there’s no denying this stoned-out groovester of a record rocks like a greasy acid-fried demon. This combo have swallowed their influences whole like an enormous whale filling up on plankton and krill, and in only a few years have honed their ensemble sound to fatal perfection. Released on 24th this month as a limited press LP pressed in yellow and black swirling vinyl. A delirious slab to charm your fitful dreams at night.

With each issue of the magazine, a postcard is attached inside. On said postcard is a unique code which constitutes your download voucher. Visit the website link as indicated and you can download the free mudboy album in mp3 format, and thus hear him playing live on the pipe organ. This offer only available to purchasers of TSP 17. Don’t blame us if you don’t have Broadband!

Lightmusic. Reviews of DVDs, art-movies, experimental works and visual accompaniments to music and sound. This time including a look at the famous 1970s UK structural-materialist film-maker Guy Sherwin.

Guilty Pleasures. In this incisive essay, Harley Richardson dissects the self-deluding thought processes at work behind this London club and CD reissue phenomenon that makes ironic heroes out of Leo Sayer, Paper Lace and Gilbert O’Sullivan.

Vinyl Viands continues its survey of the format which was supposed to have died and vanished long ago, yet here we are swarming with enough psychedelic cover art to wallpaper the entirety of Cairo’s museum of the ashcan. Bend your teeth against these blackberry-flavoured Fruit Pastilles!

Needless to remark The Sound Projector continues to swear its dark allegiance to the BLACK METAL hordes, with ten pulsating pages of quivering BM reviews penned from the hand of Australian writer Jennifer Hor.

American artist Cybele Collins has submitted some excellent drawings this issue. She’s from Rhode Island, the hotbed of creative endeavour that brought us Lightning Bolt, Geoff Mullen, and the Kramer’s Ergot books.

Also another interesting page features Australian Surf Music records reissued by a Japanese label. They were all used as soundtracks for little-known and little-seen movies on the art of hanging ten. From the 1960s and 1970s. We call this little section “Tales from the Tube” in honour of a comic book by Rick Griffin (US underground comix artist who also surfed).

And there’s some great developments in acoustic folk music, including not only records by Sharron Kraus but also the amazing C. Joynes, Directing Hand, Robbie Basho and Cath & Phil Tyler.

Regular review sections include: FIELD RECORDINGS, ATOMS OF PURE NOISE, TAPE MASCHINES MAKEN KLANG, IN THE ART GALLERY, ENGLISH MUSIC, NIGHTMARES AND PENUMBRA, USA UNDERGROUND, STONER AND DOOM, THE NORDIC REALMS, ALL FRENCH, THE DRONING ONES, THE CRACKLING ESTHER, GUITAR MUSIC, THE UTTER FREAKDOM, THE PHANTOM OF LIBERTY, ROCK, quiet music, SONGS, and – erm …maybe even more.

The Secret Magazine that will introduce you to Death!
—————————————————————————–————————-

Pourquoi? See the writings of Andre Breton on Surrealism. Death sells. The front cover not only uses the word ‘death’, but contains at least one subliminal skull image and a hideous melting face image too. The cover also uses the word ‘free’. These are proven to be the two most successful marketing devices known to the advertising world. We’ll see if this strategy boosts sales. But we also know that intelligent Sound Projector readers are not easy to manipulate.

Your Sound Projector team this ish:
Ed Pinsent, Jennifer Hor, Aaron Robertson, Richard Rees Jones and Harley Richardson.

And here’s a full alphabetical list of artists whose records you will find in the pages of The Sound Projector 17th. Regular readers of the blog will notice that some of these records have already been noted in our ‘new arrivals’ section throughout 2008, but rest assured that the pages of the magazine contain completely new (and more detailed) reviews.
