Real nice set of treated flutes and voices with a supernatural dimension…French electro-acoustic genius erikm with Japanese flautist Ayako Okubo and percussionist Olivier Maurel. Erikm drew sketches on paper one day, then made mental observations about visual art of Paul Klee and Francis Bacon, and soon started seeing ghosts everywhere. In sympathy, Ayako Okubo confirmed she could also sense a “yokai” in the recording studio. A “yokai” is very specific to Japanese culture, perhaps more than a ghost – it can be any object, any animal, any spirit. We only know it by the noises it makes in the dark.

Besides gorgeous treated sounds and fragmented voices, possible to glimpse some hidden truths which may surround us every day through medium of this record. Also stories of dogs, frogs, guns, girls picking chestnuts, laughing bones, and Gracula (a mynah bird who speaks Japanese). All occultists welcome to scry, but anyone who’s been woken in the night by squatting spirits in their bed or unwelcome night visitors entering through a window will find solace in these delicate grooves, these finely-etched shades.

May also be an accompanying book, I didn’t get a copy. (28/11/2022)
