Maorooro is the duo of Francesco Cigana (drums, percussion, objects) and Luca Perciballi (prepared electric guitar), and Empires (DISS014) sees them diving deep into the ocean of disturbance as they fish for pearls – or rather, fish for lumps of carcinogenic mineral they can use to poison the minds of their enemies.
Like these two best when they switch into semi obnoxio-mode, like on ‘Apapoteko Larynx’, which shies not away from abrasive and nastino surfaces, or ‘Vestibular System’ which adheres to an inane, spastic rhythm that will drive you bonkers in short order. More to it of course; duo explore unusual noises and novelties with gusto and barely a recognisable element to be found across ten tracks, plus they can do the bleak-desolation thing with facility, such as on ‘Palomar Void Zone’, a frankly outer-space monster suggesting vast cavernous spaces on the hostile planet they are traversing, said space also filled with terrifying shrieks from the torso.
Another plus point is the brevity of the tracks, mostly around 2-4 mins, indicating our Italian compadres have no desire to inflict lengthy lectures or self-indulgent flabbering around the swamp on their listeners. Then there’s the ugly sleeve. Lines of green algae ripped from the brain. Tasty. And a printed quote about quasi-scientific perceptions which takes in viral organisms and nebulae in outer-space, in the framework of the “alien time-flow”.
