FRANCE L’EAU DES FLEURS eaudesfleurs002 LP (2023)
Second LP released on this exciting French label L’Eau Des Fleurs, which showcases international underground and outsider music and appears to focus on vinyl pressings exclusively, with lovely art covers.
Today’s item isn’t too far away from the same turf trod by Mirrors (#001 on the label), a guitar-noise-abstraction attack by Michel Henritzi and Michael Morley. The combat here takes place on the airless surface of a distant planet (see cover photos) and pretty much slams the guitar yawp of Argentine mangler Courtis against the vile table billowings of renowned French assassin, Romain Perrot aka Vomir. But it’s much more than that, since “electromagnetic sources, objects, tapes and wind field recordings” are also supplied by the South-American half of the act, the wind eructations most noticeable on the B side where they cut through eight acres of mud and flip over a laden packhorse with the power of hot steel axes. Likewise Vomir, credited with “acousquantics noise and concrete” shows us how the English language is inadequate to convey the full extent of his extremist actions. Lasse Marhaug added the liner notes, in which he mischievously suggests that the French noise genius was killed by a falling tree before completion of the project, and this LP is intended as his epitaph.
Listeners may derive more queasy, gut-churning pleasure from the remorseless monotony and extreme frequencies of the A side, which does indeed stretch our emotional tolerances to beyond the breaking point, but when the wind and sunlight fall on the right angles of the parklands, then the more ambiguous desert-stretches of the windy B-side might be just the fungal treatment that your sensitive body parts require. Even so the entirety of Sin Comentarios – a title which translates, naturally enough, into “do not give approval to those who indulge in depravity” – passes on a burdensome weight to the listener much like a backpack filled with heavy lead, which must be ported to the other side of the bridge before the tide pulls in.
