Italian Michele Anelli is mostly known for his bass playing, but here on Lentamente Essere (KIRIGIRISU RECORDINGS kgr054) he’s making a foray into electronic experiments, sometimes adding objects to the mix, which he did in Turin in 2024. In this electro-acoustic mode, he’s clutching at an attempt to “objectify sound”, which might mean simply capturing sounds on tape, or poking around the rim of a porcelain vase just to see what makes it squeak. He hopes to express a prelapsarian condition before mankind learned to speak, when we had no language but still communicated, and we had no formalised musical education but still managed to make some form of music. His brain may be trundling on the right lines, but he needs to push a bit further with his arms to fully realise these fundamental, challenging ideas of his; the sounds here are interesting and richly textured, but don’t amount to much more than indicative sketches, a rough map to his new Eden.
