Deceptive Patterns Force the User

Veuglaire is another alias for Romain Perrot, our favourite French maestro of sick noise and disaffected psychological murk. His Demo 2025 (DECIMATION SOCIALE DSTAPEVEUG) cassette is already sold out.

Five short fragments and one long 18-minute one, which might all have been torn from the same session of unholy blasphemy and ultra-violence. It’s all made with his voice and electric guitar, as if reducing the proposition of “rock music” to the most simple and primal version of itself, stripping away all the conventions and baggage to find a way back to the fundamental roots, reconnecting with an urge so basic that it’s almost like hearing a Neanderthal Man attempting to generate music with a wooden club and granite boulders. Natch, distortion and feedback are part of the package, but Veuglaire doesn’t wallow in the scads of unstoppable noise which stream out of his Boss-Katana 50 like so much poisoned lava.

If you can bear to listen past the sheer repellent ugliness which he’s so intent on cultivating (and at which most sensible people will recoil), you’ll hear some of the most dynamic and inventive music this player has ever produced in the name of “noise”. His “harsh noise wall” efforts were intense and nauseating, but perhaps too unvarying; here, as he’s also done in Maginot and Meurs, he’s finding ways to express chaos and negative energy in highly imaginative, dynamic forms. At the same time, we’re still being smothered in unhealthy and introspective emotions which are a huge part of the claustrophobic mood of this demo tape. The main event at over 18 mins is called ‘A Pattern Of Deceit’, which merges amplifier hum, distortion, feral guitar playing and anguished vocals into an incredible howl of anger and pain, with its title hinting at the many forms of hypocrisy and lying which are now embedded in everyday life across the world and afflict just about all of human discourse; Veuglaire simultaneously rails against this insufferable condition, and attempts to smash the shackles of dishonesty with his own searing truths, expressed in noise.

As ever, Romain Perrot excels in this incredibly raw and direct form of communication, and reincarnates himself with a unique intensity in a transformation would terrify many other timid musicians. Recommended to all fans of extreme noise, punk rock, Black Metal and insane outsider art guitar hell! (27/08/2025)
